Project Description

The existing overlay technologies were developed in decades ago. It has an inherent limitation in mitigating reflective cracking and requires complex installation procedures. Utilizing the new type of overlay technology can reduce a significant amount of workload and save the budget for more pavement maintenance, and for improving the overall transportation infrastructure health condition.

Objectives: The proposed research will develop an improved rollable pavement overlay which can be fabricated in the laboratory or factory before the installation. Different formulas will be developed to address different purposes of application.

Significance and Potential Impacts on State of Practice: The roadways in the United States have been under-maintained for many years due to the lack of funds. The poor infrastructure condition has caused uncountable losses in economy and reduction in public safety. The maintenance technology especially the pavement surface treatment needs to be updated urgently. The proposed technology may significantly reduce the installation costs with better surface characteristics. Fabrication in a factory and easy installation will improve the quality of overlay and be potentially transformative.
