UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.— The Center for Integrated Asset Management for Multimodal Transportation Infrastructure Systems (CIAMTIS)—the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) Region 3 University Transportation Center (UTC)—has announced the selected competitive research projects for years 2019 to 2020.
Pulling research from the UTC consortium led by Penn State and including George Mason University, Lehigh University, Morgan State University, University of Delaware, Virginia Tech and West Virginia University, the selected projects will examine a host of transportation topics and issues as they relate to bridges, highways, rail and transit.
Titles of the selected competitive projects include:
- Planning for the Inevitable: Readying DOTs for Disaster Debris Management
- Development of a Practical Risk Framework for Railway Bridge Stiffness Transition Maintenance and Upgrade
- Strategic Prioritization and Planning of Transportation Infrastructure Maintenance, Rehabilitation, and Improvements Incorporating Continuously-Sensed Data
- Efficient Service Life Extension of Bridges through Risk-based Life-cycle Management and High-performance Construction Materials: Emphasis on Corrosion-resistant Steel
- Fatigue Life Estimation of Bridges with Smart Mobile Sensing
- Life Extension of Fatigue-Damaged Highway, Rail, and Transit Bridges
- Numerical and Experimental Investigation of Efficient Geometric Arrangement of Metal Fin Tube Foundations for Transportation Applications
- Time-Based Modeling of Concrete Bridge Deck Deterioration Using Probabilistic Models
- Railroad Track Performance Monitoring by Advanced Sensor Network & Big Data
- Improved Methods to Assess Corrosion Damage in Prestressed Concrete Beams
- Use of SmartRock Sensors to Monitor Pavement Performance for Supporting Rehabilitation Decision Making
- Bridge Load Rating and Evaluation Using Digital Image Measurements
- Optimized Performance of UHPC Bridge Joints and Overlays
- Development of Low-Cost Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) and Response Spectra Techniques Phase I of “Development of a Cost-Effective Sensing System for Integrated Traffic and Pavement Response Monitoring in Support of Pavement Management”

The Center for Integrated Asset Management for Multi-Modal Transportation Infrastructure Systems (CIAMTIS) is the 2018 USDOT Region 3 (Mid-Atlantic) University Transportation Center (UTC) housed at the Larson Transportation Institute (LTI), on the University Park campus of Penn State.
